We hit 80° here in NYC yesterday, so it feels like summer is on the way, and that means it is time for GIANT LINEN SHAWLS! Giant Linen Shawls (or “GLS”s for short) are my favorite warm weather accessory. They can be used as a sarong at the beach, a picnic blanket at the park or a cover-up when you stumble into an overly air conditioned store at the mall!

I’m working away behind the scenes to finish up my latest batch of hand dyed quilted goodies. They are all one of a kind, so be sure to join my email list so you don’t miss out! In the mean time, I thought I’d tell you about my quilt coat!
My last post was about the first quilt coat I made when things were on pause here in NYC last year. I really loved the first one, but there were a few tweaks that I wanted to make.
I changed the shape of the underarm seam, removed a seam from the sleeves and added a seam to the center back.
For the quilting, I tried hand tying, which I hadn’t done before. I decided to place the knots on the inside of the coat, so as not to make the outside look too busy.
I am totally in love with this coat! It is so warm and cozy and basically feels like wearing a quilt all day long.

I tried to put my time to good use during the shutdown last year. For me, that meant spending about sixteen hours a day at my sewing machine. I had been mulling over design ideas for a quilted coat, and this was my first attempt.
I didn’t want the design to be too complicated and I wanted it to be a “one size fits all” type of garment.
I think it came out surprisingly well for a first try! There are a few things that I tweaked for the second version, but overall it came out pretty close to what I pictured in my head.

This is the quilt that began my obsession with quilting. I had been dyeing fabric and using it to make clothing for years, but I had never made a quilt. I had kind of an outdated idea of what quilting was, when I discovered the world of Modern Quilting. I can put the fabrics together any way I want? Sign me up!
Hand dyed fabric takes a lot of work, so I try not to let any of it go to waste. After many years of sewing, I had built up quite a collection of small scraps. I decided to make a quilt to put my precious scraps to use!
I laid out my fabric so that the colors would create an ombre effect, going from blue to purple to red. I was intrigued by hand quilting (and I didn’t have a walking foot yet!), so I chose to hand quilt my quilt using navy sashiko thread. I hand quilted out of necessity, but I ended up absolutely loving the texture it gave the quilt–so soft!
As I mentioned in my previous post, I’m in the midst working on a new collection of quilted items, and I’m so tempted to hand quilt some of them. It takes a lot longer, but the texture can’t be beat! While I’m working on my new collection, I wanted to share another piece from the archives. I have no idea why I never blogged it, because I love it! I made it out of organic cotton interlock fabric, that I dyed with a folded shibori pattern. I have a few pieces with a similar pattern in my store, here and here.
The fabric is really thick and soft, so it kind of feels like you’re wearing pajamas, which is A-OK with me. Just have to be sure not to knock anything over with these mega-sleeves!

I’m catching up on blogging a bunch of things from the past few years. One of them is this mini quilt that I made last year, using a pattern that I designed. I wanted something that wasn’t overly complicated (it’s all rectangles), but that still had an interesting pattern.
I decided to hand quilt it, because I was working on it during the shutdown here in NYC last March, so I was in no hurry to finish.
I love the texture that the hand quilting adds to both the front and the back!
Once I went back to work I kind of put this pattern on the back burner, but I’m thinking I should finish it up and add it to my store. This version is a good size for a wall hanging or a baby quilt, but I will also include a larger version for a throw or twin sized quilt. I’ve been experimenting with the different forms a quilt can take and this is one of my favorites. It’s a quilted cowl that pops on over your head and can be pulled up like a hood or scrunched down around your neck. It’s super warm, made with my hand dyed fabric and is available now in my online store.

This past year has basically made me want to wrap myself in a quilt 24/7. It’s a little cumbersome to leave the house in a full sized bed spread, so I made this little jacket as an alternative. This one is mine, but I’ll be adding another hand dyed quilted jacket and some other quilted goodies to my store in a few weeks. Each piece will be one of a kind, so once it sells, it’s gone!
